Cleansing sounds like the simplest step in skincare: remove what should not remain on the face.
But a cleanser has a surprisingly complicated job. It must remove some combination of oil, sweat, sunscreen, makeup and environmental material while leaving the skin comfortable enough to function normally afterward.
For equestrians, that challenge is amplified by barn dust, perspiration, outdoor exposure and frequent sunscreen use.
First: What Does pH Mean in Skincare?
The pH scale describes how acidic or alkaline a water-based environment is. Healthy skin has an acidic surface environment often referred to as the acid mantle.
That has led to widespread advice that every good cleanser must match a particular “perfect” skin pH. The science is more nuanced.
Research published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science found that cleanser mildness cannot be predicted from pH alone. Surfactant system, formulation and the way ingredients interact with the stratum corneum also matter. In other words, a cleanser does not become gentle merely because a label advertises a skin-like pH.
Surfactants: The Engine of Cleansing
Water alone does not efficiently remove oily material. Cleansers therefore use surfactants—molecules that help water interact with oils and debris so they can be rinsed away.
Different surfactant systems behave differently. Concentration, combinations of surfactants, supporting ingredients and overall formulation all affect cleansing performance and skin feel.
This is why reducing cleanser selection to a single pH number misses much of the story.
Everyday Cleansing vs. Treatment Cleansing
